“There are obvious synergies between CCS and E&P’s traditional businesses. They both require an understanding of fluid and rock behavior; they both involve transporting gas and drilling and completing wells. With CCS you inject pressurized CO2 into reservoirs, whereas at E&P we typically do the reverse to produce oil and gas. Many of the same principles apply. So there’s a real link between the two, and E&P’s expertise will be especially valuable for this new business.

Northern Lights is a major pioneering CCS project in Norway, developed by a joint venture owned equally by TotalEnergies, Equinor and Shell. The first phase of the project, expected to get underway in 2024, will provide storage for 1.5 million tons of CO2 a year. An additional capacity of up to 5 million tons a year will be developed in the years thereafter to keep pace with rising commercial demand and to help decarbonize the European industry.”
